8 days? geez

bad andrew, 8 days without a post.

anyways, things are... steady. and boring. mostly boring.

but boring for a good reason, i guess? i'm in antisocial-annie mode to save money. it's very difficult to do things with other teachers WITHOUT spending lots of cash. screen golfing, going to the city, having dinner, etc. so i just come home after work and catch up on things. tv, books, podcasts, whatever is available.

still practicing my thai. working on the alphabet and general survival terms: hello, how are you, thank you, i'm sorry, goodbye, etc. it's going slowly, but going.

i'm overly excited for thailand, so it's putting a damper on things here i think. in thailand i'll be teaching purely to teach. there's no profit involved, no business, just teaching. here, i'm teaching for money. the school is a business and the business comes first. that's not nearly as fun or rewarding.

even when i'm in thailand i'm not planning on traveling. i just want to spend as much time teaching as i can, when i have an opportunity to teach in a situation like that, why would i WANT to travel? this is going to be 10x better.

no pictures this time either, sorry! this weekend is a picture trip, so i promise i'll try to get some up then. and 28th onward is my vacation, which should be some beautiful tropical photos. please be patient!

Andrew make sure you learn stuff like do you take credit cards? where is the bathroom? how do i get to _______________?

andrew l. said...

i just say it in english louder and slower.

CREH-DIT CARDS. DO YOUUUUU TAAAAAAKE THEEEEEM? CREDIT CARDS. YES?

then i get really angry when they don't understand.

คุณใช้บัตรเครดิตไหม = do you take credit cards
ที่เป็นห้องน้ำหรือไม่ = where is the bathroom
ฉันจะได้รับการ _______________? = how do i get to __?

tada!
that might work a little better than just yelling at the nice people andrew....... how would you feel is someone just walked p to you and started yelling at you in like french or something?

if i were in america, then i would yell "SPEAK AMERICAN. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND YOU." i do believe it is illegal to be french in korea. (not really)

good detective work though!

learning to read it is the hard part. i've been reading books which have it in thai, how to say it in english, and the english translation. it's... slow to work through, but i'm beginning to memorize all the survival stuff.

sa-waht dee kah (if you're a girl)
sa-waht dee krap (if you're a boy)

is hello and goodbye. but you can shorten it to just "waht dee" or "waht dee kah/krap"

sah bai dee mai kah/krap is "how are you?"
sah bai dee kah/krap is "i'm good"

so basically it's the same sentence, but you add "mai" to make it a question

the strange thing is you often don't use pronouns or say who the subject is of a sentence. and often you don't use verb tense. so "i went to the store" and "i'm going to the store" can be the same.

Haha, I cheated with translate.google.com before I got to the second half of your post. Also, never use translating websites for schoolwork. Teachers know, it's really obvious, my students try all the time.

It drives me crazy when students say "so-so."

"How are you? "So so" I try to hammer into them "I'm okay." or "I've been better." But they love saying it.

"waht dee kah/krap"

Really? So, to say hello, you can say, "What de crap?!"

I am amused!

it may read that way, but when you say it, it doesn't sound very similar. more like wu-aht dEE k-rup. it's hard to wrote tones in phonetics. there's some good youtubes about it.
